Sergey Malov Shapes a Notable Schubert Evening at the Elbphilharmonie
On 23 October 2025, Sergey Malov, serving as the “Principal Guest” of the Hamburger Camerata, presented an evening devoted to Schubert at the Elbphilharmonie’s Small Hall, featuring a program of arrangements of the composer’s works.
What made this evening special was that Malov performed on three different instruments: on his violoncello da spalla (shoulder cello), he interpreted the “Arpeggione” Sonata in a version for violoncello and strings. He then performed the vocal line of his own arrangement of six songs from the cycle Die Winterreise on the viola, and finally, he presented the remaining parts of the program as a violinist, including the late string quartet Death and the Maiden in an orchestral arrangement.
In the Hamburger Abendblatt on 24 October 2025, Verena Fischer-Zernin wrote:
“Malov’s agility is more stylistic, articulated with clean nuance, drawing from the instrument such inexhaustibly fine colors that it takes one’s breath away.”
“Grand theatre in the Small Hall—this evening. This is how music should be.”
The further concerts of his residency series will take place on the following dates:
14 December 2025 – Sasel-Haus / Works by Schubert
15 December 2025 – Friedrich-Ebert-Halle / Works by Schubert
16 January 2026 – Elbphilharmonie, Grand Hall / “Sturm” – Works by Paganini and Beethoven
