For more than 40 years, Yaara Tal and Andreas Groethuysen have been an established piano duo, showcasing the art of four-handed piano playing at the highest level. To open the new season of the Göttingen University Aula Concerts, the two internationally acclaimed pianists captivated the audience in the university’s packed auditorium with a varied programme featuring works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert.

With remarkable precision, musical intensity and evident joy in their playing, Tal and Groethuysen brought out the full range of tonal colours of the grand piano. Their performance was characterised by a shared breath and pulse, so perfectly synchronised that the music seemed to be played by a single person with four hands.

The programme combined lively marches and song-like melodies with the demanding late works of both composers. Beethoven’s Fugue in B-flat major and Schubert’s Fantasy in F minor were particularly striking, showcasing the pianists’ extraordinary expressive power. Moving between delicate, dreamlike passages and powerful, turbulent sonorities, they unfolded a wide spectrum of emotions.

The audience’s enthusiasm culminated in sustained and enthusiastic applause. As an encore, Yaara Tal and Andreas Groethuysen concluded the evening with Schubert’s playful Children’s March—a light-hearted and charming finale to an impressive concert.

“The opening of the new season of the Aula Concerts was a rarely experienced whirlwind of piano sound spanning all 88 keys of the grand piano.”

“Their performance truly gave the impression that the music was being played by a single person with four arms.”

“A masterful interpretative achievement.”
