The multi-instrumentalist Sergey Malov opened his residency series with the Hamburger Camerata on September 14. Over the course of the 2025/26 season, he will perform on various solo instruments and take part as a play-conductor in a total of five concerts.

Malov performed Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concerto on his violoncello da spalla, impressively showcasing the possibilities of electronic amplification through loops. His collaboration with the Hamburger Camerata created a unique groove atmosphere, reminiscent of a big band.

In addition, Malov directed Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in B-flat major, which he also performed as soloist. In the second half of the evening, he presented Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 in E-flat major, K. 543.

In an article in the Hamburger Abendblatt on September 15, 2025, Helmut Peters wrote:

“His incredible flexibility and versatility had already been demonstrated at the beginning of the evening as violin soloist in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in B-flat major. He himself directed the standing Hamburger Camerata, which delighted the audience with its energy and verve.”

“Malov used vibrato only sparingly, played solo cadenzas full of freedom, and engaged in wonderful dialogues with the horns and oboes in the slow movement, while showing great precision in the highly virtuosic finale performed together with the orchestra.”
