There are countertenors, and then there is Mr. Jaroussky.
(The New York Times)
The countertenor Philippe Jaroussky has established himself over more than 25 years as one of the leading figures on the international music scene and a pioneering artist for his voice type. Numerous prestigious awards attest to his remarkable career, including several distinctions at the Victoires de la Musique Classique in France (Best New Artist in 2004 and Artist of the Year in 2007 and 2010). In Germany he was named Singer of the Year—the first countertenor to receive this distinction—at the Echo Klassik Awards in 2008 and again in 2016. In 2009 he also received the award for Best Recording together with L'Arpeggiata.
Jaroussky has had the great privilege of collaborating with the world’s leading Baroque orchestras, appearing at the most prestigious festivals and in the foremost concert halls worldwide.
His extensive Baroque repertoire ranges from the refined expressive world of Claudio Monteverdi, Giovanni Felice Sances and Luigi Rossi to the dazzling virtuosity of George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi. At the same time, he is an indefatigable musical explorer and has played a major role in the rediscovery of composers such as Antonio Caldara, Nicola Porpora, Agostino Steffani, Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Christian Bach.

Philippe Jaroussky (Countertenor) - Ensemble Artaserse
Dolcissimo sospiro
Program:
In 2002, Philippe Jaroussky founded the Ensemble Artaserse to explore and record the music of Benedetto Ferrari: this event, the artist's first solo album, gave tangible form to his already deeply rooted attachment to the 17th-century repertoire — that Seicento which would never leave him throughout his extraordinary career and which he would champion in every corner of the world. Philippe's legendary musical curiosity finds in this repertoire a continent commensurate with his ambitions, one that he is among the very few to have explored so exhaustively.
From the poetic purity of the great pioneers (Giulio Caccini or the Monteverdi of L'Orfeo, so different from that of L'Incoronazione di Poppea) to the melodic breadth of their celebrated heirs (Francesco Cavalli, Benedetto Ferrari himself) or lesser-known ones (Sigismondo d'India), not forgetting Barbara Strozzi, Philippe Jaroussky has assembled a magnificent bouquet of scores from among those he loves most passionately.
With his consummate vocal mastery, his unerring musicality and his art of sculpting the word, the French countertenor has few rivals in the singular yet supremely beautiful art of the early Baroque. It goes without saying that his companions in the Ensemble Artaserse are likewise incomparable virtuosos and experts of these lofty eras, lending refined emphasis to every inflection of their director and singer.
His programm Dolcissimo sospiro includes arias by Monteverdi, Frescobaldi, Cesti, Rossi, Castaldi Strozzi....
Members of ENSEMBLE ARTASERSE are
Christine Plubeau, viole de gambe
Angélique Mauillon, harpe
Marc Wolff, archiluth et guitare
