Philippe Jaroussky

  • Conductor
  • Countertenor

Germany

The counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky has established himself as one of the major singers in the international musical world as confirmed by the French Victoires de la Musique ("Revelation Artiste Lyrique" in 2004, "Artiste lyrique de l'année" in 2007 and 2010) and at the Echo Klassik Awards in Germany in 2008 in Munich (Singer of the Year), in 2009 in Dresden (with L’Arpeggiata) and again in 2016 in Berlin.

An impressive mastery of vocal technique allows performances full of nuance and vocal acrobatics. Philippe Jaroussky’s vast repertoire of the Baroque era ranges from the refinements of the Italian Seicento with Monteverdi, Sances and Rossi to the staggering brilliance of Handel and Vivaldi; the latter being one of the most performed composers by Philippe recently. Philippe Jaroussky is also tirelessly at the forefront of musical researches and made strong contributions to the discovery – or rediscovery – of composers such as Caldara, Porpora, Steffani, Telemann or Johann Christian Bach.

Lately, he has also explored very different repertoire of French melodies accompanied by the pianist Jerôme Ducros. He has recently proposed his own vision of Berlioz' Les Nuits d'Été with performances at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid and at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

Increasingly captivated by contemporary works, Jaroussky performed a song cycle composed by Marc André Dalbavie from the sonnets of Louise Labbé. He premiered the opera Only the Sound remains of Kaija Saariaho, specifically written for his voice, at Nederlande Opera Ballet in Amsterdam in March 2016.

Philippe Jaroussky has had the pleasure of collaborating with some of the best baroque ensembles such as Concerto Köln, l’Ensemble Matheus, Les Arts Florissants, Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble, Orfeo 55, Le Concert d’Astrée, L’Arpeggiata, Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, Europa Galante, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, I Barocchisti, Freiburger Barockorchester, Appolo’s Fire, Anima Eterna or the Venice Baroque Orchestra. He has performed to high acclaim in the most prestigious festivals and concert halls around the world.

In 2002 he founded l'Ensemble Artaserse, which currently performs throughout Europe.

In January 2017, Philippe Jaroussky inaugurated the new Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, where he was invited as the first artist in residence. 2019-2020 season marked his 20-years career with some major events such as the entrance of his statue to the Musée Grévin in Paris, the publication of the biographical book “Seule la musique compte” and finally the release of a disc anthology “Passion Philippe Jaroussky”.

March 2021 saw Philippe Jaroussky's debut as conductor at the head of his Artaserse ensemble, with no singing, with the production of Scarlatti's oratorio, Primo Omicidio. This programme is performed among others at Salzburg Festival and at Montpellier Opera, which will become the residence of Philippe and his ensemble Artaserse for the next three seasons.

2022 confirms this new activity as conductor, with numerous concerts in Paris, Lyon, Montpellier, Budapest, at Épau and Halle Festivals.

At end of May and beginning of June 2022, in Paris and Montpellier, Philippe conducted his first opera in the pit, Händel’s Giulio Cesare with a superlative singers cast: Sabine Devielhe, Gaëlle Arquez, Franco Fagioli, Carlo Vistoli, Lucile Richardot.

In the 2023-24 season, Philippe Jaroussky will tour Europe with Le Concert de la Loge and Julien Chauvin. With their programme "Forgotten Arias" they can be heard in Paris, Perpignan, Munich, Krakow, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Dresden, Dortmund and Metz. At the Théâtre de l'Athénée Louis-Jouvet in Paris, Jaroussky conducts the stage production of Sartorio's "Orfeo". Duo concerts with the guitarist Thibaut Garcia and their joint programme "A sa guitare" take him not only on tour to South America but also to the Philharmonie Berlin. In the Alte Oper Frankfurt, as well as in Montpellier, Paris and Zurich, Philippe Jaroussky sings the alto part of J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion.

Philippe Jaroussky has been an exclusive artist with Erato-Warner Classics for many years. He received many awards for his outstanding discography and has thus set new standards for countertenors.

In October 2023, Philippe Jaroussky released his latest album "Forgotten Arias" with Le Concert de la Loge and Julien Chauvin. His previous album "À sa guitare" with guitarist Thibaut Garcia was released in October 2021. The album is named a song by the 20th century French composer Francis Poulenc. But its frame of reference is extraordinarily wide – both culturally and stylistically. Its 22 tracks range across 400 years and music by composers and songwriters from France, Britain, Austria, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina and the USA.

In March 2017, a project dear to his heart came to fruition: the Academy Philippe Jaroussky. The Academy is intended to support young musicians suffering of cultural isolation, through an original, extensive and demanding teaching. The Academy is housed by La Seine Musicale.

He was appointed Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.
