Germany and different countries

Jos van Immerseel is a pianist, conductor, researcher, collector, lecturer. Music in its many facets is at the centre of his work and life. His most important teachers were Flor Peeters (organ and composition); Eugeen Traey (piano); Jef Alpaerts (chamber music); Lucie Frateur (voice); Kenneth Gilbert (harpsichord) and Daniël Sternefeld (conductor). Jos van Immerseel is also a self-taught organist, rhetorician, fortepiano and clavichord player.

In 1987 he founded Anima Eterna Brugge - a symphonic project orchestra whose musicians play on the instruments that composers knew at their time and inspired them to write their compositions.

Van Immerseel taught for years at the conservatories of Antwerp, Amsterdam and Paris and was a guest lecturer at the Scola Cantorum Basiliensis (Basel), Indiana University (Bloomington) and Kunitachi College (Tokyo).

He has also worked as a guest conductor with other orchestras, including the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Vienna Academy, the Mozarteum Orchestra and the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn. In addition, he owns a unique collection of historical pianos, which are used in his concerts and CD recordings.

As a soloist, he is a regular guest at the Ruhr Piano Festival and the Chopin Festival Warsaw; the current 2022/23 season also includes guest conductorships in the Czech Republic, in Copenhagen with the Tivoli Philharmonic Orchestra and in Munich, where he conducts J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio with the KlangVerwaltung Orchestra and the Tölzer Knabenchor.

His recordings have appeared on more than 120 CDs on the Sony, Deutsche Grammophon, Channel Classics and Alpha/Outhere labels. His most recent piano solo recording was "Piano works of the young Beethoven" (2020). Renowned magazines such as DER SPIEGEL and FONO FORUM published excellent reviews: "The Belgian takes a step back and relies above all on the effect of the fortepiano instead of technical show effects. It is precisely this that brings out the 'true' Beethoven." (Der Spiegel, 12.8.2020). The release (Alpha/Outhere) of a three-CD box set of French Baroque music on the harpsichord is planned for summer 2023: on instruments from the Paris Instrument Museum by Jean-Henri Hemsch, Ruckers-Taskin and Jean-Claude Goujon/Swanen, Jos van Immerseel plays Parisian masterpieces from the 18th century by François Couperin, Antoine Marchand, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Antoine Forqueray, Jacques Duphly, Claude-Bénigne Balbastre and Armand-Louis Couperin.

In 2010 he received the Music Festival Prize of the City of Bremen, followed by the Klara Karriere Prize in 2018. Recently, the Vice-President of the Flemish Government and the Flemish Minister of Culture, Sven Gatz, awarded him the highest distinction for his life's work in the service of classical music in Flanders.
