There are countertenors, and then there is Mr. Jaroussky. (The New York Times, 2/2014)
The counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky has established himself as one of the major singers in the international musical world as confirmed by the French Victoires de la Musique ("Revelation Artiste Lyrique" in 2004, "Artiste lyrique de l'année" in 2007 and 2010) and at the Echo Klassik Awards in Germany in 2008 in Munich (Singer of the Year), in 2009 in Dresden (with L’Arpeggiata) and again in 2016 in Berlin.
An impressive mastery of vocal technique allows performances full of nuance and vocal acrobatics. Philippe Jaroussky’s vast repertoire of the Baroque era ranges from the refinements of the Italian Seicento with Monteverdi, Sances and Rossi to the staggering brilliance of Handel and Vivaldi; the latter being one of the most performed composers by Philippe recently. Philippe Jaroussky is also tirelessly at the forefront of musical researches and made strong contributions to the discovery – or rediscovery – of composers such as Caldara, Porpora, Steffani, Telemann or Johann Christian Bach.
Lately, he has also explored very different repertoire of French melodies accompanied by the pianist Jerôme Ducros. He has recently proposed his own vision of Berlioz' Les Nuits d'Été with performances at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid and at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
Increasingly captivated by contemporary works, Jaroussky performed a song cycle composed by Marc André Dalbavie from the sonnets of Louise Labbé. He premiered the opera Only the Sound remains of Kaija Saariaho, specifically written for his voice, at Nederlande Opera Ballet in Amsterdam in March 2016.
Philippe Jaroussky has had the pleasure of collaborating with some of the best baroque ensembles such as Concerto Köln, l’Ensemble Matheus, Les Arts Florissants, Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble, Orfeo 55, Le Concert d’Astrée, L’Arpeggiata, Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, Europa Galante, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, I Barrochisti, Freiburger Barockorchester, Appolo’s Fire, Anima Eterna ou encore le Venice Baroque Orchestra. He has performed to high acclaim in the most prestigious festivals and concert halls around the world.
In 2002 he founded l'Ensemble Artaserse, which currently performs throughout Europe.
Already having an impressive discography, Philippe collaborated with the Edition Vivaldi de Naïve with Jean-Christophe Spinosi and the Ensemble Matheus.
Philippe Jaroussky has been an exclusive artist with Erato-Warner Classics for many years and has received many awards for his recordings.
In 2016, Philippe and Cecilia Bartoli again performed together, and the two acclaimed singers dedicated their Concert to early baroque arias. Accompanied by Ensemble Artaserse they interpreted a fine selection of Monteverdis secular vocal music.
In 2016-2017, Philippe inaugurated the new Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, where he was invited as the first artist in residence.
In 2019-2020 season, Philippe is this time in residence at Konzerthaus in Vienna, where he will present some key programs of his season: the Schubert recital, accompanied by Jérôme Ducros, a Vivaldi-Händel program with the Artaserse ensemble , and finally a program Berlioz and Dalbavie with the Radio Symphony Orchestra.
He will debut at La Scala in Milan in the production of Giulio Cesare de Händel, directed by Robert Carsen, whose musical direction is entrusted to Giovanni Antonini.
This season marks the 20 years of Philippe's career with some major events such as the entry of his statue at the Musée Grévin in Paris, the edition of a book and finally an anthology of 3 discs Passion Philippe Jaroussky.
Recently, a project dear to his heart came to fruition: the Academy Philippe Jaroussky. The Academy is intended to support young musicians suffering of cultural isolation, through an original, extensive and demanding teaching. The Academy is housed by La Seine Musicale, a brand-new and impressive venue situated in Boulogne-Billancourt.
He was appointed Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.
