Philippe Jaroussky

There are countertenors, and then there is Mr. Jaroussky. (The New York Times, 2/2014)

The countertenor Philippe Jaroussky has established himself as one of the major singers in the international musical world as confirmed by the French Victoires de la Musique ("Revelation Artiste Lyrique" in 2004, "Artiste lyrique de l'année" in 2007 and 2010) and at the Echo Klassik Awards in Germany in 2008 in Munich (Singer of the Year), in 2009 in Dresden (with L’Arpeggiata) and again in 2016 in Berlin.

An impressive mastery of vocal technique allows performances full of nuance and vocal acrobatics. Philippe Jaroussky’s vast repertoire of the Baroque era ranges from the refinements of the Italian Seicento with Monteverdi, Sances and Rossi to the staggering brilliance of Handel and Vivaldi; the latter being one of the most performed composers by Philippe recently. Philippe Jaroussky is also tirelessly at the forefront of musical researches and made strong contributions to the discovery – or rediscovery – of composers such as Caldara, Porpora, Steffani, Telemann or Johann Christian Bach.

Lately, he has also explored very different repertoire of French melodies accompanied by the pianist Jerôme Ducros. He has recently proposed his own vision of Berlioz' Les Nuits d'Été with performances at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid and at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

He has performed to high acclaim in the most prestigious festivals and concert halls around the world such as Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Théâtre du Châtelet, Salle Pleyel, Opéra de Lyon, Opéra de Montpellier, The Barbican Center and Southbank Center in London, Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, Grand Théâtre du Luxembourg, Konzerthaus in Vienna, Staatsoper and Philharmonie in Berlin, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Teatro Real in Madrid, Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York.

In 2002 he founded l'Ensemble Artaserse, which currently performs throughout Europe.
Already having an impressive discography, Philippe collaborated with the Edition Vivaldi de Naïve with Jean-Christophe Spinosi and the Ensemble Matheus.

In 2009, he was appointed Chevaler des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.

In 2012, Philippe performed with Cecilia Bartoli at the Festival de Salzbourg for the production of Guilio Cesare and as a result of this collaboration was invited by Cecilia to record Agostino Steffani’s duets with her on her album Mission.

In 2016 Philippe and Cecilia Bartoli again performed together and the two acclaimed singers dedicated their Concert to early baroque arias. Accompanied by Ensemble Artaserse they interpreted a fine selection of Monteverdis secular vocal music.
After being Artist in residence in Hamburg in the new Elbphilharmonie, and with an outstanding performance during the Operning of this new Philharmonie, Philippe will dedicate his time to an extensive Handel tour during Fall 2017 with his ensemble Artaserse, promoting the release of his new recording for Erato-Warner Classics. Then, he will take part of two prestigious reprise of opera production in Paris: Only the Sound remains of Saariaho (at the Opéra de Paris) and Alcina of Händel (at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées). At the end of the season, he will take on the title role of Orfeo of Gluck again at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
